Antique Dining Chairs: "Beauty and Elegance"

The Christmas holidays are approaching, and with all the excitement of family gatherings and time-honored traditions, it is important that your settings reflect the essence of the celebration. Grandma's old recipes set the tone for the tastebuds. Family photos on the wall spark memories long forgotten...

...and antique dining chairs, a symbol of heritage that has passed the test of time, support us in our seats as we enjoy those conversations that we sometimes have only once a year.

Dining chairs of old come in many shapes, sizes, and styles, but one factor common to them all is that they come in sets, so if you are in the market to buy be prepared to shell out if something strikes your fancy. I can't even begin to go into detail about the vast universe of antique dining chairs, but I will give you a few tips on making your purchase.

Presumeably you will be using your chairs for sitting, so make sure all of the joints are tight. Don't be afraid to give each leg a tug, and by all means give it a test drive!

Inspect the chair closely, outside as well as underneath. Look for the presence of cracks or previous repairs. A good antique will stand the test of time, but not all antiques remain functional.

MADE IN CHINA = NOT ANTIQUE. This goes without saying, but some people still don't get it.

If you like a particular antique dining chair but the upholstery is torn, you can always have the pierce recovered. It is very rare to find an old sitting chair that is "like-new," unless of course it was locked away and never used. The important thing to remember is that you want your purchase to be unique and hold a lot of character...

...just like that crazy uncle of yours!
